Deaths from Ayahuasca: An Analysis

Is Ayahuasca Dangerous?

Ayahuasca and Safety: Understanding the Risks

Understanding the risks associated with ayahuasca is essential for anyone considering this powerful plant medicine. While ayahuasca has been used for centuries as a tool for healing and spiritual growth, it is not without its risks—especially when consumed without proper guidance, medical screening, or in unsafe environments. Potential risks include serious interactions with medications, particularly antidepressants, which can lead to life-threatening conditions like serotonin syndrome. Those with a history of mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis may experience worsening symptoms. Physically, ayahuasca can affect heart rate and blood pressure, making it risky for individuals with cardiovascular issues. Additionally, unregulated retreats or inexperienced facilitators may lack the necessary protocols to handle medical emergencies or adverse reactions. While ayahuasca is generally safe when used responsibly under the right conditions, understanding these risks and taking appropriate precautions—such as thorough research, medical consultations, and choosing a reputable retreat—is crucial for ensuring a safe and beneficial experience.

There are plenty of stories about deaths involving the visionary brew ayahuasca, but almost none of these deaths are attributed to consuming the ayahuasca itself but rather result from pre-existing health conditions, interactions with medications, unsafe practices, or events that occur before or after the ceremony. Still, these stories are concerning, and with ayahuasca’s rising popularity, there is a greater need for education, responsible facilitation, and safety protocols to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Misleading Headlines and the Truth Behind Ayahuasca-Related Deaths

In recent years, international headlines have read:

  • “Tourist Dies at Ayahuasca Retreat”

  • “Traveler Dies After Taking Psychedelic Drug”

However, these headlines only tell part of the truth, the details revealed in the articles show that ayahuasca has very little to do with the death associated with itThese alarming titles paint ayahuasca as inherently dangerous, but the truth is that ayahuasca is very safe and many of these deaths could have been prevented with proper screening and safety measures.

The Importance of Medical Screening

At New Life Rising Ayahuasca Retreat Costa Rica, participant safety is our top priority. Before accepting anyone into our retreat, we conduct a thorough medical screening to assess potential risks.

Medications and Ayahuasca – A Dangerous Combination

One of the questions we ask is regarding medication – specifically antidepressants. In an age where it seems everyone suffers from some degree of depression or anxiety, prescription antidepressants – SSRI’s, SSNI’s MAOI’s, etc, are prevelant. These types of medications have a severe interaction with ayahuasca and can not be combined.

  • SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)

  • SNRIs (Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors)

  • MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)

Many people are shocked to learn that they cannot take ayahuasca while on antidepressants. The combination can lead to serotonin syndrome, a dangerous condition that, in extreme cases, can be fatal.

Psychological Conditions and Ayahuasca

Another major concern is mental health history. Ayahuasca is not suitable for individuals with:

  • Psychosis

  • Schizophrenia

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Suicidal tendencies

  • Some mood disorders

For those with these conditions, ayahuasca can exacerbate symptoms and lead to serious psychological distress.

Other Health Considerations

In addition to mental health, certain physical health conditions must be evaluated before drinking ayahuasca. These include:

  • Heart conditions – Ayahuasca can increase blood pressure, which may be dangerous for those with cardiovascular issues.

  • Liver health – Since ayahuasca is processed through the liver, individuals with liver disease or impairment should proceed with caution.

  • Substance abuse history – Combining ayahuasca with recreational drugs or prescription medications can result in life-threatening reactions.

The Risk of Tobacco Purging

Some fatalities have also occurred due to tobacco tea purges, a pre-ceremony ritual in which participants drink a strong nicotine-based brew to cleanse the body before taking ayahuasca. Unfortunately, this practice can result in nicotine poisoning, which has led to deaths.

Note: This is not the same as the ritualistic smoking of tobacco during the ceremony, which is used for protection and poses no threat. New Life Rising does not offer tobacco purges.

Ayahuasca is Safe When Used Responsibly

Despite these concerns, ayahuasca remains safe when used properly, with appropriate screening, responsible facilitation, and consideration of individual health risks. The fear surrounding ayahuasca-related deaths should not overshadow the immense healing potential of this sacred plant medicine.

How to Choose a Safe Ayahuasca Retreat

To ensure a safe and positive ayahuasca experience, follow these essential safety tips:

✅ Research the retreat center – Ask if they have ever had medical emergencies and how they handle them.
✅ Verify medical screening protocols – Ensure the center screens participants for health risks and medication interactions.
✅ Make sure someone knows your plans – Let a trusted loved one know where you’ll be and how to contact you.
✅ Know your shaman – Understand their training, experience, and approach to ayahuasca ceremonies.
✅ Ask what’s in the ayahuasca brew – Ensure the preparation does not contain unsafe additives.
✅ Check reviews and testimonials – Look for experiences from past participants.
✅ Confirm proximity to medical care – Ask how far the center is from an emergency medical facility.
✅ Inquire about emergency protocols – Ensure the staff is trained to handle medical situations if they arise.

OUR MISSION & VALUES

WE ARE ALL HEARERS

Sharing the magic of this medicine is a great honor and a great responsibility. Ayahuasca has been the catalyst for every great transformation in our lives, and we are committed to guiding others on their journey to healing. We accept people from all walks of life in a non-judgmental environment.

As individuals who have had trauma experiences, we understand the importance of having a safe space that encourages vulnerability for authentic self-reflection and discovery. Healing can be painful, and we are here to support our guests so that they feel seen and held throughout the process.

For more than a decade, we have committed ourselves to this path, and we respect the Peruvian Mestizo traditions that have been handed down from our teacher and his teacher before him. As part of that tradition, we complete master plant dietas that give us the tools necessary to create a protected sacred ceremonial space.

We hope to help you find a renewed sense of peace and joy in your life as you embark on a beautiful journey to uncover your full potential.

BUILT ON LOVE

SINCE 2014

Matthew and I have been partners in this work for over a decade. Plant medicine brought us together in 2014 and we've been dedicated to this path ever since. Everything in our lives has been shaped by Ayahuasca. Not only did she lift us from our darkest moments after years of battling addiction, but she gave us the purest gift of love in finding each other.

We've had our share of ups and downs. Things haven't always been easy. It's been a long road and we've had to navigate many personal and professional challenges over the years. But at the end of the day, ayahuasca has helped us cultivate a deep love rooted in mutual respect, support, and admiration. We've turned to her to help us through trials of marriage and personal doubt. It's because of this work that we've been able to grow stronger as individuals and as partners, lovers, and best friends.

We hear all the time from guests that they don't understand how we can do this work, and while we love to help others, the truth is that it's just a happy by-product of helping ourselves. It's our hope that as we continue to heal, we are able to better support you in your own healing.

Working with ayahuasca is truly humbling. It's not a responsibility we take lightly. Our ayahuasca retreat Costa Rica program is designed to give you a curated balance of support and space.

Thank you for letting us share the magic.

Ayahuasca Costa Rica has been a gift to us through the years and we will forever be indebted for all the gifs we have received.
