What is an Ayahuasca Dieta?
An ayahuasca dieta follows a set of restrictions and guidelines prescribed by an ayahuasquero or curandero for a specific purpose, usually the treatment of an ailment or disease. The shaman will determine which master plant will best assist in the healing, and set a length of time for the dieta.

Ayahuasca dietas are also used when learning to work with ayahuasca, to build protection, develop plant allies, to rid of negative spirits, and to heal spiritual disease.

The ayahuasca dieta will vary slightly depending don't the issue it is intended to address, but typically follows adherence to the following principles: no salt, no sugar, no oil, and o sexual activity. The dieta meals are often rice and boiled potato or plantain. Occasionally, chicken, beans, and eggs are also included. Dietas are often done in isolation and prohibit the use of phones, books, toothpaste, soaps, deodorant, and shampoos.

AYAHUASCA DIETA VS 'DIET'

The ayahuasca dieta is not to be confused with the simple 'ayahuasca diet' which is simply a set of dietary distractions to reduce food interactions with the MAOI’s found in ayahuasca. They include avoidance of foods high in tyramine, a naturally occurring byproduct of the amino acid Tyrosine. MAOIs block monoamine oxidase, which is an enzyme that breaks down excess tyramine in the body. Excessive tyramine can elevate blood pressure and lead to a hypertensive crisis. Aged foods contain the highest level of tyramine, so you want to avoid things cured meats, aged cheeses, pickled or fermented foods and alcohol. You would have to eat a lot of foods very high in tyramine for it to reach any kind of dangerous level.
